Important Things to Know When You're New!

Welcome to one of the best training programs offered in California! We want you to have a very successful and enjoyable learning experience. The first few weeks of anything new can be confusing; we hope by providing these reminders, you’ll feel comfortable right away. If you have concerns, be sure to ask the instructors.

The class combines guest speakers, lecture, self-study, and informational handouts. It is important that students have a notebook/binder to take notes and organize information.

  • Please check in each day.  The sign in sheet is located at the reception station in the front of the room.  If you arrive late and the sign in sheet is not at the desk, notify your instructor or assistant that you have arrived.
  • Excessive absences, late arrivals/early departures, and/or excessive breaks  (break-time is 20 minutes for the full-time class) will jeopardize your enrollment and there are no course extensions. You have a maximum of three absences during a nine-week session.  The attendance policy is available online, click here to view it. Be sure to call the class (925/609-7108) if you will be absent or late, or email your instructor:

Instructor (8:00-2:30 p.m.)  Robin Wood, rwood@cccoe.k12.ca.us

  • If you do not show and do not call you may be dropped from the program.  Please try to schedule interviews outside of class hours.
  • Except for the first few days of a "new class", there are no reserved seats. Seating is on a first come first serve basis, so please don’t "fall in love" with a particular spot!
  • GUM, FOOD, LIQUIDS or CONTAINERS of any kind are never permitted in the classroom. Please store any of these items at the table in the front of the classroom. Breath mints are the only acceptable items permitted at the workstations; please be sure to throw away any wrappings.
  • NEVER bring in any outside disks or CDs to class. Viruses are rampant and this is the main way we can protect against them. You may take any disks you’ve purchased home with you when you complete the class.
  • Since we share our class with over 150 other students during the course of the day, it is important that you clean up your workstation before you leave. Here’s what to do:
    • Please start cleaning up your workstations 10 minutes before the end of class. Please ask questions prior to class cleanup.
    • Log out of your workstation and shut down the computer and monitor.
    • Class reference and workbooks should be returned to bookshelves. All DISKS should be labeled and returned to the disk area.
    • Please remove all paper and personal items. Throw away used cleaning supplies, wrappers, Kleenex, etc. Check the floor around your workstation and from the student area in the front of the classroom.
    • Put your keyboard, mouse and pad, help sign, and book holder neatly in position for the next student. Roll your chair under the workstation table.
  • We encourage you to work with other students to complete projects. Please use a very low voice when working with others as someone next to you may have trouble focusing if there is too much noise.  If you plan to use a tutorial CD that has sound or work on Web sites that contain multimedia, you must bring headphones to class.
  • To save paper and toner, please use the print preview feature of your software and print only those lessons that you will hand in for checking (Web design students do not print ANY assignments). If you notice any printer spewing out lots of paper, please notify the instructor immediately.
  • If you need to talk to an instructor/instructional assistant, ALWAYS use your help sign.  Teachers' work is often confidential and teacher work areas are restricted.  If you need to talk to a teacher in private, a convenient time will be arranged.  When a teacher is working/talking with another student, put up your help sign at your workstation and the instructor will assist you as soon as possible.  Do not form a line around the instructor.  Please note that instructors do not help with work assignments.
  • Please turn cell phones and pagers off or to silent mode during class. Cell phones and pagers left on during class are very disruptive.  If you turn your cell phone to silent and leave it under the monitor, the monitor screen will vibrate when you have an incoming call.  Please wait until you get in the hall to answer the call.   In case of emergency, you can be reached at 925-609-7108.
  • Plan to arrive no earlier than five minutes before your class time; there is very little room for students to wait in the lobby and waiting students cause unsafe evacuation conditions and customers of our neighboring businesses have difficulty accessing their offices. Please keep the noise level down in the hallway.  Students are not permitted to sit on the stairwell at any time.  Students must park across the street  in the Contra Costa County Office of Education parking lot (77 Santa Barbara Rd.).  If you have a disability/injury that makes walking difficult, please notify your instructor.

THANK YOU! PLEASE LET US KNOW YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVING THE CLASS ENVIRONMENT!
