Web Design & Development Course Information

Overview:The Web Design and Development course is a self-paced program.  Depending upon prior computer experience, students may enroll in the class to learn specific software applications or they may choose to complete the entire course curriculum

Students may also opt to attend class full-time or part-time depending on their scheduling needs.

Students who enroll in the Web development program may attend training for a maximum of 720 hours. 

Times & Duration:

12:15 - 4:15 p.m. Monday - Friday (students may attend up to four nine-week sessions or 36 weeks to complete the entire course curriculum)

4:15-6:15 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

4:15-6:15 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday

Some students may opt to attend six hours per day (12:15-6:15 p.m.) to complete the course in 27 weeks.

Note:  Due to state funding requirements, classroom attendance is mandatory.  This course is only available during the afternoon classes.

Note:  Students may also enroll in the course after a session has started if space is available.  Students who register after the start of a session will be charged a pro-rated fee of $5.00 per week.  No refunds or credits will be issued.

Course Description:

This self-paced course is designed to provide the necessary skills and training for an entry-level position in the field of Web Design.  Learn to develop and maintain Web sites for a corporation or your own small business.

The class focuses on Web page planning, basic design, layout and construction, and setup and maintenance of a Web site. HTML/XHTML, Cascading Style Sheets, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, PHP, MySQL and various other Web page and image creation tools are taught in the course. This course is taught in a PC environment, but all skills are transferable to the Macintosh and a Mac is available for testing student Web sites. Students will also develop a portfolio of sites during the training.

While extensive computer experience is not required to attend the class, it is important to be able to type, and to be familiar with Windows, word processing, and the Internet prior to attending. The course is self-paced allowing students to progress at their own speed. It is our hope that students will complete all of the objectives for the course, however, some of the advanced objectives may not be completed in 27 weeks.

Student Objectives:

Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Define terms associated with the World Wide Web and the hypertext markup language.
  • Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the Internet and the various tools utilized including: Browsers, e-mail clients, FTP clients, compression utilities, newsreaders and search utilities.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic Web design principles.
  • Demonstrate awareness of design considerations that affect Web page construction including audience, browser version and cross platform issues.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how to design and create effective and structured Web pages using XHTML, CSS and and other emerging Web technologies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate use of color and typography on the Web.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the various tools used to create XHTML documents including:  HomeSite and Dreamweaver.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how to create raster and vector images (including animation) for the Web and print utilizing  Photoshop, Fireworks, Illustrator, and Flash.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how to edit digital images from scanners and digital cameras.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of image compression; utilize various tools and techniques.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge scripting languages including: JavaScript and PHP.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Web database technologies including: MySQL and Coldfusion.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of effective Web site promotion.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the client/server relationship and various protocols used on the Internet.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of emerging technologies including: content management systems, blogging, wikis, and podcasts.

Certificates and Project Information

Certificates are awarded for each software application. In order to receive a certificates, a student must complete the required unit project.  Projects should be completed as the student progresses through the course, not at the end of the course.  Here is an outline of a project submission timeline for the 27 week course:

Complete and submit XHTML/CSS ProjectWeeks 4-6
Complete and submit Macromedia ProjectWeeks 10-12
Complete and submit Photoshop ProjectWeek 16
Complete any other unit project and final projectsWeeks 16-25
Make Final Project CorrectionsWeek 26-27

Of course the above is just an outline.  While there is no required homework the course curriculum is quite comprehensive and you will need to spend some time at home working on projects.

The final project must be submitted one week (7 class days) prior to the student's class completion date.  This gives the instructor time to review the final project and for the student to make any necessary corrections. The instructor will not accept projects on the last day of class or after a student has exited class.
